Although the chronicles of the kings who preceded Jesus were full of God’s gracious promises, when the end of His physical life occurred, Jesus’ friends and followers could only assume the worst. The end had come. And we face the same conflict; faith alone can lead us to life after the end—the end of our lives and of history itself. This morning, we hear again the words of Scripture and receive our Lord’s body and blood so that the true reality, life eternal, may break through to our hearts and minds despite what our senses tell us. This Jesus is not only “son” to all the kings before Him; He is one with the Father and, by adoption into His Body, our elder brother. And He is risen indeed!
